The Three Gorges Dam

This week in Science learned about all of these different water crises. We were assigned groups by taking a survey. We were paired with people who had the same interest in studying the same thing. There were different categories and we choose what we wanted to focus on studying the most. I chose to focus on dams so I got paired up with Maddy, Molly, and Analie. We decided to focus on one particular dam and not dams in general. The dam we chose to study was The Three Gorges Dam. Some of the most interesting information we have found about this dam is what would happen if the dam broke. If the dam broke it would cause a similar wave to a tsunami. It would wipe out hundreds of acres of farmland. This dam is also threatening 57 plant spices and over 400 animal species including the very endangered baiji dolphin. This dam was founded in 2003 by the creator named Sun Yat-Sen. Some fun facts about this dam are that it is warping, also from flooding so much it has created an artificial lake and is a tourist attraction. The Three Gorges Dam is 185 meters tall, 7,660 feet long, and this dam’s mass is around 463,000 metric tons of steel.
