Making Ice cream

This week in science we made ice cream! First Shane showed us a video talking about the difference between endothermic and exothermic. I can’t remember if it was ice cream day or another day that she showed us the video. If it was another day it still relates to ice cream. Now talking back about the video. There were a few examples, one was hot hands. They said hot hands was an exothermic process because it released heat. However ice cream is an endothermic process. Because ice cream has to absorb warm energy to make ice cream cold. After she showed us the video we made ice cream. Next, before we got to touch the ingredients she threw cards and parred us into groups of two and three. There were instructions on the table and she had already explained how to make ice cream. The supplies we had were Milk, Sugar, ice cream salt, snow, a pitcher, plastic bags, cups, popsicle sticks, and things to measure the ingredients. First, we measured out the amount of milk we needed and poured that into the plastic bag. Then we measured the amount of sugar needed in the bag. Closed the bag mixed it up then put that bag upside down into another quart size bag. We stuck the quart size bag into a gallon size bag poured ice cream salt on the bag put gloves on then we went outside. Filled a pitcher with the snow. We poured the snow into the bag and the salt we closed the gallon bag. Then came the really fun part we got to toss and chuck the bag back and forth with our partners. My partner was Harrison and we tossed the bag back and forth and then we accidentally ripped a hole in the bag. So we got another bag put some more salt in that and we were very gentle in the beginning. But towards the end, we threw it back and forth really aggressively. Then accidentally ripped a hole in that bag so then we decided to be done tossing it back and forth so we went inside. When we were tossing it back and forth the ice cream salt was melting the snow so that would be an example of endothermic. Because the salt is making the snow warmer so then the ice cream is absorbing the heat from the melted snow and making the ice cream cold.

THREE QUESTIONS

  • What would happen if you did not mix anything together and just let the bag of ice cream sit outside?
  • When people make ice cream today at home they have a tray thing that they put in the freezer but there is nothing warm so how does it turn into ice cream?
  • Would you have ice cream if you just put it in the freezer?
